Opening of 'The Byre' furniture shop breathes new life into Strothers Lane

12.00.00am GMT Fri 26th Feb 2010

Inverness MP Danny Alexander today carried out the opening of The Byre, a quality independent furniture shop on the city's Strothers Lane.

The Byre is the first of several retailers set for a row of Strothers Lane commercial units which have lain empty since their completion in 2007.

The new shop stocks a wide range of top quality contemporary and antique furniture, as well as home furnishings, lighting and accessories.

Commenting after opening the shop, Mr Alexander said:

"It's excellent to see new independent businesses taking up opportunities to locate themselves at the heart of the Highland Capital.

"The Byre will be a valuable addition to the strong range of shops which Inverness city centre already boasts.

"With a significant number of further businesses showing interest in the Strothers Lane development, there is every chance that The Byre will be the first of many, breathing new life into a key part of the city.

"Inverness city centre is an excellent and fast-improving place to shop, live, work and spend leisure time. We should not refuse to see where we can still make big improvements, but nor should we fail to acknowledge progress which is laying a strong foundation for economic recovery."

Experienced businessman, Matthew Tett - who has recently returned to Scotland with his family after a twenty year absence and settled in Nairn - is behind the venture. Mr Tett said:

"We are delighted to be back in Scotland and in particular the Highlands, to realise my long held ambition of setting up on my own as an independent furniture retailer.

"Whether you are looking for that one-off statement piece or to complete a room set, The Byre is here to serve.

"The Byre complements the already vibrant shopping experience of Inverness, giving even more reason to visit."
