Lib Dems lead city committee on new speed measures - Christie

12.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 9th Jun 2009

Lib Dem councillors in Inverness today called for 20mph speed limits to be extended to more areas in the city. Supported by Inverness Milburn councillor Kenneth MacLeod and Inverness South's Thomas Prag, Alasdair Christie, councillor for Inverness West put a motion before the City Committee which prompted a report to be commissioned by Technical Services to come before the next committee.

Councillor Christie said:

"These measures are already around schools and in the new streetscapes in places like Ness Walk. It is clear that there are far too many roads in Inverness that are too dangerous to continue with a 30mph limit.

"This is not a blanket policy on main arterial roads but a safety initiative in residential areas. During my successful campaign in Inverness West I found that many people support and would welcome this measure in places like the Bught where there are parks, sports facilities and sheltered housing.

"Children and traffic don't go well together and the success of schemes in both Raigmore and parts of Drakies shows that it can work. I hope that the rest of the Inverness committee will support the Lib Dems in this worthwhile measure when it comes before us at the next meeting."
