George Lyon is new Liberal Democrat MEP

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 8th Jun 2009

John Thurso is today writing to congratulate George Lyon who this morning became the new Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland. The result confounded some commentators who had said the Liberal Democrats would struggle to hold on to any representation with the reduction of Scottish seats in the Parliament. The nationalists also fared less well than had been predicted failing to gain the extra seat they had convinced the media they were on course for.

John said:

"George is from our region and fought a strong campaign on local issues here. I know it was very important to him to top the poll in the Highlands and I look forward to us having a strong and experienced voice in Brussels. A big thanks to everyone from the north who lent us their vote and to all those helpers who helped us campaign on the ground."
